Search Engine Optimization is the process of altering the copy on all of the pages of your website to make it easier for prospective clients or customers to find your business online. It’s important to pay attention to your SEO for the following reasons:

  • Gives insights into your target audience through experimentation
  • Searchers tend to only focus on the first 5 results in a google search
  • Helps smaller businesses stand out against larger competition

Tip #1: Start writing a blog for SEO to increase organic traffic

Optimizing your website for search engines is oftentimes not enough to get your website to the top of Google rankings. Writing compelling copy using keywords for your homepage, about page and sales page is only the beginning. If you are not writing a regular blog for your business, you are missing a valuable boost of SEO to increase organic traffic.

Google’s priority is to provide the best user experience to the people who are using their search engine, so if your website only has 1 – 2 pages of content using a keyword phrase, Google is more likely to push your site below your competition that is offering 15 + pages on that keyword through the use of a business blog.

Tip#2: Long tail keywords or keyword phrases

Back in the old days, you had to figure out exactly what your possible consumers would type into a search engine to get your website to show up. These days it’s not quite as rigid with the exact words you’re using because better SEO uses long tail keywords.

A long tail keyword is a phrase that your prospective visitor might type into Google, that is specific to the content that you are offering.

For example, let’s say you’re writing a blog post about content upgrades to increase organic traffic that is targeted toward bloggers. You could write your keywords in a couple ways:

Possible keywords:

  • Content Upgrades
  • Organic Traffic
  • Increase Traffic

Possible Longtail keywords:

  • Content upgrades for bloggers
  • Increase organic blog traffic

Your long tail keywords will result in better traffic with an increase in organic traffic rates because you’ve chosen 3 to 4-word phrases that get really specific about what you’re offering.

Tip#3: Deep linking & External linking

Google uses bots to crawl your website to make sure it’s easy for their users to navigate, so making sure you have a clear navigation bar on your site is just the beginning.

Whenever you create a new blog, it’s worth taking the time to see if there is anywhere you can refer to older blog posts, and also go back to your older posts to see if you can link to your new blog in places that make sense. This is called deep linking within your website, and when Google bots crawl your site, it allows them to jump from one of your keyword-rich pages (ie. a blog post) to another relevant keyword-rich page within your website. This practice is one of the easier ways you can increase your search engine relevance.

External linking for SEO is the process of adding a relevant link to an outside source to your website. In current SEO best practices, this is the single most important aspect of page ranking, so it’s recommended to build relationships with other websites early on. By externally linking to other websites, you are providing that external site a vote of confidence for search engines.

Whenever you use an external link to reference another business’s website, contact that site and let them know that you’ve boosted their content. Work toward building relationships strategically so that you can expect them to link back to you at some point, or even better, allow you to guest post on their website with a link back to yours.
